The Land of 10,000 Homeless project can be used in several ways in the classroom. Here are some curriculum ideas:
1. Focus on one person (ages 6+)
Ask the children to listen to the songs and watch the video, and then to choose one voice to focus on. Have the children answer the following questions:
1. What is the person’s name?
2. How old do you think the person is?
3. How did the person become homeless?
4. What is one interesting thing that the person says about homelessness?
5. What emotions do you think the person feels?
6. What emotions do you feel when you listen to them speak?
2. Focus on the overall message (ages 8+)
Ask the children to listen to the songs and watch the video, and then to give their overall impression of the problem of homelessness, and the experience of being homeless. The following questions can help stimulate discussion:
1. What causes people to become homeless?
2. What ages of people can be homeless?
3. What is something that surprised you about homelessness?
4. Is there homelessness in your community? What is being done about it?
5. What can be done to reduce or fight homelessness?
6. What can you do personally to assist in ending homelessness?
3. From local to global (ages 10+)
Ask the children to listen to the songs and watch the video, and then lead a discussion about homelessness in the world. The following questions can help stimulate discussion:
1. Why did the people in the video and songs become homeless?
2. What might cause homelessness in other parts of the world?
3. The people in the video and songs experience problems . . . would a
homeless person in another part of the world have the same problems?
4. Are there countries in the world without homelessness? If so, how do you
think they solved the problem?
5. What would it be like to be homelessness in Asia? In Africa? In Latin
America?
6. How are poverty and homelessness connected? What can you do to fight
homelessness and poverty around the world?
