Voices of the Streets provides a way for populations not heard in the mainstream media to tell their stories.
The concept comes from a realization that the best way to educate yourself about the problems of society is to listen to those who are most affected. Their rich stories tell volumes about our society and our treatment of our most vulnerable and disadvantaged.
Mainstream media seldom asks for the opinion of those adversely affected by homelessness, poverty, discrimination, racism, or other serious and persistent societal problems.
Instead, they usually ask for the opinion of politicians, community leaders, appointed representatives, and experts. While their input is valuable and important, it is often more interesting and more insightful to hear from everyday people who experience society’s problems directly - they are the “voices of the streets”, and their real stories shine a bright light on our biggest social problems.
The first Voices of the Streets project, “The Land of 10,000 Homeless”, tackles the problem of homelessness by giving a voice to individuals living in Minnesota and experiencing homelessness. The project took two years to complete.
Future projects are being planned. Please continue to visit this site in the upcoming months and years. Every project, when completed, will be available for free viewing or listening at this website.
