There are many ways that you can combat the problem of homelessness in your community. Here are a few:
1. Give time
The best way to fight homelessness is by giving your most valuable asset - your time. Check out listings for local food shelves and homeless shelters, and ask to volunteer. Some shelters need overnight volunteers, others need people to help serve breakfast in the morning, and still others need employment counselors.
The most efficient way to give your time may be to do what you are best at. If you are a lawyer, you might see how you can volunteer your time helping homeless persons with their legal problems. If you are an excellent cook, try volunteering at a shelter and introduce some new dishes. If you are an artist or musician, use your art to educate others about homelessness.
2. Give money
Another great way to combat homelessness is to give money. Two organizations who will make excellent use of your contributions are the National Coalition of the Homeless and the Minnesota Coalition of the Homeless. Both can be found under “Resources” in the above menu.
What organizations serve the homeless in your area? Check out your local listings. You might find food shelves, churches, shelters, employment agencies, or free or low-cost medical clinics. These valuable services are deserving of our support.
3. Give your vote
One important way to assist in ending homelessness is with your vote. How are the elected officials in your area combating homelessness? What are their positions on homelessness? Educate yourself so that you can make an informed decision.
4. Give your respect
Even if you don’t have time to do any of these things today, you can at least give your respect. A person who is homeless is not invisible, even though they are often treated like they are. Please acknowledge them and give them your respect.
